Politically exposed persons (PEPs) are individuals who hold or have held public roles that may make them more susceptible to bribery, corruption, or abuse of power. Screening for PEPs is a key component of any AML compliance program.

ComplyCube categorises PEPs by level of influence and exposure:

  • PEP level 1: International-level figures such as heads of state, ambassadors, and senior officials of international organisations.
  • PEP level 2: National-level public officials, including ministers, members of parliament, and senior executives in state-owned enterprises.
  • PEP level 3: Regional officials such as state governors, provincial leaders, or senior regional bureaucrats.
  • PEP level 4: Local government officials, including mayors, council members, or lower-level public servants.

A positive result in this screening category doesn’t imply wrongdoing but requires enhanced due diligence.
